Dajjal - The One-Eyed Monster

Before the end of the world, there will be many liars who will seek to lead mankind astray from the path of Allah. The biggest liar of them all will be known as Dajjal.

Dajjal is the greatest test of faith from the time of Adam عليه السلام up until the end of times. He will have many powers that will amaze people and distract them from the truth.

Who is Dajjal?

Dajjal will be a wicked human being who will deceive people. He will claim to be a guide for humanity (Messiah) but in reality he will misguide them all. Allah will give him  many powers, and he will use them for great evil.

He will travel the Earth for 40 days, and will visit every city except Makkah and Madinah. He will not be able to enter Makkah and Madinah because the gates of these cities will be guarded by angels. [1] When Dajjal enters a city, he will call people to obey him and accept him as a god.

What will Dajjal look like?

His features are explained in Ahadith in detail so that the believers can recognize him, and are not deceived.

He will be one-eyed, as his right eye will be covered by a piece of skin. The word ‘Kafir’ will be written on his forehead. All believers will recognize it! He will be a young man with thick, curly hair and reddish skin. His left eye will be like a floating grape in water.

He will use all his powers and tricks for one purpose only: making people believe he is a god and leave the path of Allah. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has taught us not to believe his lies.

Allah is not one-eyed and we cannot meet Allah before our death. Dajjal is a human who will eat and drink, and Allah is far above that. [2]

What will Dajjal do with these powers?

Food and Water

He will have a lot of  food and water. He’ll only give it to  those who follow him. The ones who reject him, and remain firm on Islam will suffer from food and water shortage. This is all a test from Allah for His true servants.

Rain

Dajjal will order the sky to rain, and it will. When he orders the earth, plenty of fruits will grow. Cows will get fat and land will prosper. But he will only do this for those who accept him as a god.

Rivers of Fire and Water

He will have two rivers, one that looks like fire and one that looks like pure water. He will call them Paradise and Hell. This will be a trick, as his river of fire will be water and his river of water will be fire.

Life After Death

He will have the power to kill a man and then bring him back to life. These powers will cause many people to go astray and disbelieve. [3]

But the true believers will be strengthened in their faith when they see all these powers. They will have knowledge and will recognize it’s him!

The years before Dajjal’s arrival will be filled with wars and hunger. When the companions of the Prophet ﷺ heard of this, they got worried asked, how will the people survive?

Our beloved Muhammad ﷺ replied, “Tahlil, Takbir and Tahmid (saying, la ilaha illallah, allahu akbar and alhamdulillah) will keep people alive just as food does.” [4]

Who will defeat Dajjal?

The world at the time of Dajjal will be full of suffering, tyranny and oppression. A group of Muslims will be fighting against the disbelievers under the leadership of a righteous leader, known as ‘Imam Mahdi’ when Dajjal will emerge. Dajjal will then travel throughout the earth gathering his followers.

Allah will then send Prophet Isa عليه السلام to the earth. He will descend from the sky, on the wings of two angels. Prophet Isa عليه السلام will have true miracles from Allah, as his fragrance will kill every disbeliever who smells it. He will pray Fajr salah behind the Imam Mahdi. Prophet Isa  عليه السلام will then search for Dajjal, and kill him at the gate of Ludd (in present day Palestine). He will wipe the faces of Muslims to comfort them, and tell them of their status in Paradise. [5]

How can Muslims protect themselves from Dajjal?

1

Make
Dua

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us prayers that will protect us against the test and harms of Dajjal.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Allaahumma inni a’oodhi bika min ‘adhaab jahannam wa min ‘adhaab al-qabri wa min fitnat il-mahyaa wa’l-mamaat wa min sharri fitnat al-maseeh al-Dajjal
Translation:
“O Allah I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Hell fire, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah. [7]

Memorizing the first ten (or the last ten) verses of Surah Al-Kahf will also protect against the harms of Dajjal.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from Dajjal.” [8]

Memorize Ayahs from Surah Kahf

3

Keep Away from Dajjal

When Dajjal arrives, Muslims should keep far away from him, because of the confusions he can create and wonders he will possess.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Let him who hears of Dajjal go far from him, for I swear by
Allah that a man will come to him thinking he is a believer and follow him because of confused ideas roused in him by him.” [9]

May Allah protect us all from the fitnah of Dajjal. Ameen!

Fatima, (May Allah be pleased with her) the Queen of Jannah leads a simple and humble life in this world. Her husband Ali, and her sons Hassan and Hussain (May Allah be pleased with them) are dearest to the Prophet of Allah, Muhammad (Peace be upon him). When the two boys unfortunately fall sick, the worried parents vow to fast for three days to ask Allah to grant them health.

Things become challenging when right at the time to break the first fast, a needy person knocks at the door and requests the noble family to share their food. This pattern repeats on the second day and third.

Will Fatima and Ali (May Allah be pleased with them) succumb to their hunger or respond to the calls of the needy at their door?
