Sulaiman(AS) And The Jinns

Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام was the son of Prophet Dawud عليه السلام and they both had a vast kingdom to rule over.

Prophet Sulaiman made a dua to Allah (swt) : “My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”

In the acceptance of this dua Allah (Swt) granted Prophet Sulaiman the authority to rule over humans, the Jinn and even the animals.

Nobody after him ever had such an amazing kingdom uptil now.

Apart from this he was gifted with the superpower to control the wind. He would command and the wind would obey. It would blow gently towards wherever he wished and carry him along with his army on a big wooden platform. [1]

Remember! There were no cars or airplanes at that time.

Specific times were allotted to each of the members of the family of Prophet Dawud and Prophet Sulaiman for worshipping Allah, as a result, the prayer mat would never remain unoccupied by anyone praying. [2]

How fast was the wind?

Prophet Sulaiman  عليه السلام could travel a journey of two months in one day on the wings of the wind!

Have you ever tried breaking a lock with your bare hands?

It is not possible, right? Locks, tools, cars and electronics have in them a metal called copper. Copper is a very hard and strong material with a very high melting point.

But Allah (Swt) made copper flow like a long stream of water for Prophet Sulaiman  عليه السلام. It was even made cool enough to easily make and shape utensils and other things of need. [3]

A wise move at a young age

When Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام was young, his father Prophet Dawud عليه السلام used to be the ruler and judge of the people. Once, two men came to his father’s court to resolve a conflict between them.

One of the men was a shepherd and owned a flock of goats.

While the other one was a farmer and owned a field of crops.

The shepherd’s goats had eaten and destroyed all the crops from the other man’s field who was now demanding justice.

Prophet Dawud عليه السلام made a decision for their case according to the rules of the court but Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام advised his father a solution which was even better and was accepted by Prophet Dawud عليه السلام.

Prophet Dawud’s Decision

The shepherd should give all his goats to the owner of the field.

Prophet Sulaiman’s Decision

The shepherd and the owner of the field should exchange their properties. The owner of the field should use the goats for his own benefit like taking their milk and wool while the shepherd should work on the field to grow the crops again. Once the crops are grown like before, both the men can have their original properties back.

Panic amongst the ants

Once Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام was marching along with his troops. An army of men rode behind him, followed by the army of Jinn and the birds flew above all of them, shading them from the heat of the sun. The army entered a valley where the ants had made their house.

When the ants heard the stomping thuds of Prophet Sulaiman’s عليه السلام army approaching they all panicked and one of them warned all the others saying “O ants! Go quickly into your homes so Solomon and his armies do not crush you, unknowingly.”

Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام was amused when he heard this ant and he smiled. He then thanked Allah for teaching him the language of birds and animals by making this dua:

“My Lord! Inspire me to always be thankful for Your favours which You have blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please you. Admit me, by Your mercy, into the company of Your righteous servants.” [5]

A Bird, A Queen & Sun-Worshippers

Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام had in his service the Hoopoe Bird, which had special powers to see through the ground and find water. Once, while checking the birds, Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام found that Hoopoe was missing.

Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام addressed his army of animals, Jinn and humans:

“Why do I not see the hoopoe – or is he among the absent?

I will surely subject him to a severe punishment, or even slaughter him, unless he brings me a compelling excuse.”

It was not long before the bird came and said:

“I have found out something you do not know. I have just come to you from Sheba with sure news.”

“Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a magnificent throne”

“I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah. For Satan has made their deeds appealing to them, hindering them from the right way and leaving them unguided.”

Is the Hoopoe telling the truth?

Did Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام punish Hoopoe?

Prophet Sulaiman v/s The Evil Jinn

Allah (swt) had given Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام mastery over the evil Jinn. They used to work under his command and build beautiful Mihraab and pictures, large cooking wares and water tanks.

One of the tasks assigned to the Jinn was the construction of the third holiest masjid for Muslims – Baitul Maqdis. These Jinn were very rebellious by nature and only kept working out of fear of Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام.

Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام knew that his time to die was near but the construction of Baitul Maqdis wasn’t yet finished. He did not want the Jinn to know that he had passed away at the time of his death, else they would stop working and the construction would be left unfinished.

Prophet Sulaiman Tricks The Jinn

So with the permission of Allah, Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام came up with a plan. At the time of his death he went and stood by his seat, in a transparent glass building, from where he used to watch the Jinn working and they could also see him. He stood in the position of worship and prayers leaning on his staff.

When his soul was taken away by angels of death, his body did not fall down with the support of his staff. The Jinn thought that he was engrossed in worship and dared not to peek and disturb him. They continued working for one whole year until the construction was complete and Allah (swt) allowed a termite to eat through the staff of Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام.

The termite made the staff weak and Prophet Sulaiman’s عليه السلام body fell down. At that moment the Jinn got to know that Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام had passed away. [6]
